The horse is a mirror of civilisation.

Across mountains, deserts and grasslands, horses continue to shape lives, identities and traditions.

Many of these living horse cultures are quietly disappearing.

FARAS exists to document them before they are gone.

For thousands of years, human history has been carried on the back of the horse.

There are places where the horse is still pivotal to existence. Places where horses are not symbols of luxury, or leisure, or sport. In these places, the horse remains a partner, a livelihood and a way of life.

FARAS explores these landscapes, these lives and the unique bond between horse and human.

Created by photographer Jess Henrich, through immersive fieldwork and time spent riding with the communities themselves, the project is building a visual archive of the world’s remaining living horse cultures through photographs and research.

Wherever man has left his footprint in the long ascent from barbarism to civilization, we will find the hoof print of the horse beside it.'
